NEW DELHI: Five inmates of an orphanage in west Delhi were allegedly sodomised by a 50-year-old man on Monday. The accused, identified as Bala, is currently absconding.

According to the police, Bala was working as a helper in the orphanage for the past one year and is a resident of Subhash Nagar.

The incident came to light when a five-year-old victim narrated his story to his guardian when the latter visited Sahib Devi Kalyan Avam Shiksha Samiti Anathashram in Subhash Nagar. The police were subsequently informed about the incident. Police investigation revealed that four other children were also sodomised by the accused.

The medical examination of the victims confirmed sexual assault after which a case under Section 377 of IPC was registered at Rajouri Garden police station.

The founder president of the orphanage, Gopal Krishna Makhija said, ‘‘Bala was working for the past one year. He used stay at the orphanage itself and did petty jobs there.’’ On the day of the incident the accused had allegedly consumed alcohol.

The orphanage, which is licensed by Delhi government, had 40 children aged between 5 and 18 years. Meanwhile, the police said that they have questioned Bala’s brothers who live in the same locality.

‘‘The four brothers told us that they have been living separately for the past two years and that Bala was involved in other criminal cases in the past,’’ said a senior police officer.
