SOS Children's Villages Ethiopia
Ethiopia remains one of Africa's poorest countries. Income per capita is less than £6 per month and there are extremely low literacy rates. Continuing food and water shortages cause high levels of malnutrition, and the incidence of communicable diseases is rising. Limited educational opportunities are further disrupted by the displacement of families and the struggle for survival. Over 7.3 per cent of the population is infected and an estimated 2.2 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, including 200,000 children.
SOS Children first village in Ethiopia opened at Makalle in the early 1970s. Other villages are located at Harrar, Addis Abeba, Awassa and Bahir Dar. Catastrophic drought in 2000 led to another SOS emergency relief programme, at in Ogaden in the south-east near the Somalia border. Set up in Gode this provided food and basic medical treatment. The completed village at Gode opened in August 2004 and means that over 700 children in Ethiopia have a unique family and SOS mother giving love and care.
Education is provided through nursery and primary schools allowing over 3,000 children to benefit. Vocational training is provided at Awassa through agricultural training and at Adis Abeba with workshops for carpentry, metalwork and car mechanics.

SOS Children's Villages Equatorial Guinea
With a population of just 400,000 and Equatorial Guinea is one of the smallest countries in Africa. Despite some wealth from recently discovered oil deposits, most of the population lives below the poverty line. The infant mortality rate is high, as is life expectancy, and there are high levels of unemployment and illiteracy.
A unique SOS Children’s Village at Bata was opened in 2000 following the establishment of a nursery and a primary school. This was a programme to improve child welfare and the level of education.
In 2001, an SOS medical centre was opened to provide medical care for the local people. With the capacity to treat over 2000 patients a year, the centre has a ten bed in-patient ward as well as an operating and delivery room.

SOS Chidren's Villages Egypt
Explosive growth in population has been the cause of many social and economic problems, particularly in Upper Egypt where poverty is increasing.
Working here since 1977, three unique SOS Children’s Villages are established at Cairo, Alexandria and Tanta. Over 270 children have a family for life with their own SOS mothers in family homes. Over 90 teenagers live at two SOS Youth Homes, whilst undertaking vocational training or further education, under the guidance of a youth leader who helps them on the first steps to independence.
In 1994, torrential rains in southern Egypt caused severe flooding leaving hundreds dead and over 15,000 people homeless. SOS Children Villages set up an emergency relief programme at Asyut with 42 temporary family houses plus medical and social centres.
Mid-2003, saw a joint project with UNHCR where children in Cairo who were African war refugees were repatriated after conflict or resettled elsewhere.

SOS Children's Villages Ivory Coast
In Ivory Coast, about 7% of the adult population is affected by HIV/AIDS and about one-third of all orphans - 310,000 - have become orphans as a result of HIV/AIDS. A large number of children who are infected impedes economic growth; in turn they become HIV positive parents.
Working here since 1969, SOS Children supports about 200 children at Abobo Gare close to Abidjan city, and Aboisso, 150kms from Abidjan.
SOS Children has SOS medical clinics at both Abobo-Gare and Aboisso helping families and children in need especially those affected by HIV/AIDS - supporting local communities with food, medicine, school fees, setting up self-help projects.

SOS Children's Villages Chad
Chad, the fifth largest country in Africa, is also among the poorest countries because of a weak infrastructure and the internal tension between the Muslim north and the Christian south. Average daily income per head is less than 50p (£46.60 in the UK). There is an expectation that, with the completion of the pipeline linking Chad's oilfields with terminals on the Atlantic coast, funds will be available for development projects.
SOS Children's Village N'Djamena was completed in 2005 with twelve family houses for 120 orphaned and abandoned children. In addition, there is an SOS Nursery School for 50 children in two classes and an SOS Primary School for over 200 children in six classes.
There is also an SOS Medical Centre which gives regular medical check-ups and promotes preventative medicine in the local community. It can treat up to 5,500 patients a year.

SOS Children's Villages Central African Republic
Poverty is widespread with little access for most people to even basic social services. Infant and under-five child mortality rates have increased in recent years, together with maternal mortality, malnutrition and HIV/AIDS prevalence.
Working in Central African Republic (CAR) since 1992, SOS Children’s Village Bangui supports 110 children giving them a family for life. It is 6 km from the city centre, in the western district of Gbangouma between the hills of Gbazabangui and the river Oubangui. A mixed residential area, there are nursery, primary and secondary schools, a market and a hospital all within easy reach of the village.
11 family houses and 5 youth houses which are home children and young people. A small kitchen garden provides the villages with fresh fruit and vegetables. Attached to the village are a nursery school and a primary school, both of which are open to children from the neighbourhood. An SOS medical centre was set up in 1995 to improve the level of medical care available in the area and treats over 500 patients every month.

SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde
Poor in natural resources and prone to drought, Cape Verde is heavily dependent on food imports, mostly in the form of aid. A significant portion of the population live below the poverty line, and a high percentage of children suffer from chronic malnutrition.
SOS Children provides a loving family home to over 160 children at the SOS Children’s Villages at Assomada and Sao Domingos. Over 200 children benefit from nursery education at both villages, including children from the local area as well as those from the village.

SOS Children's Village Cameroon
Poverty is widespread, with over 50 per cent of the population living below the poverty line, particularly women and children. An estimated 56 per cent of the population is under 20 years old and infant and under-five mortality rates are on the increase.
SOS Children cares for just under one hundred children at Mbalmayo near the capital, Yaoundé. In response to poor literacy rates locally SOS Children established a nursery school and a primary school. Today they provide access to education for well over 400 children from the village as well as the local community.
Further community aid for the local population is provided by the SOS medical centre in the village which treats over 350 patients a month, offering general medical care and preventative health counselling.

SOS Children's Villages Burundi
Over 500 children are cared for at four SOS Children’s Villages (Bujumbura, Gitega, Muyinga, Rutana) in Burundi. Working in the country since the mid 1970s, SOS Children was well placed to support the community at the outbreak of civil war in 1993.
SOS schools across the country provide education to children from the villages as well as the local community – nearly 2,500 children in total.
Many children are given assistance through SOS medical centres and SOS Social Centres. At Rutana, 100 vulnerable children from the local community, who have been affected by HIV/AIDS are supported monthly.

The small republic of Burkina Faso in west Africa is one of the poorest countries in the world. Despite a recent decline in infant and under-five mortality rates, there has been an overall deterioration in children's health due to malaria, acute respiratory infections, diarrhoea, and malnutrition. Widespread unemployment and poverty has further worsened the situation for women and children.
SOS Children’s Villages at Polosgo, 10 km north of the capital city, Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso are home to over 210 children. At Ougadougou, a small medical centre provides treatment and first aid for both the SOS mother and child, SOS families and local people. Bobo-Dioulasso, near the western border with Mali provides nursery education for 150 children, a combined primary and secondary school for 900 children and a clinic for both the local people and the SOS families.
