SOS Children's Villages Botswana
Ninety-seven per cent of the 1.5 million population have access to safe water, and with free primary education over 84 per cent of children are enrolled. However, enormous problems are created by the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate in the world. AIDS orphans under the age of 15 are estimated to number nearly 80,000. Over 380 children have their home at the SOS Children’s Village Tlokweng, near the capital Gaborone or Francistown, on the Zimbabwean border. In additional at Tlokweng, a vocational training centre teaches tailoring, welding and carpentry providing skills for independence. Children attend local government schools which are in walking distance and younger children access pre-school education through SOS nursery school.
