SOS Children’s Villages Benin
High infant and maternal mortality and poor female literacy rates together with acute need for care facilities for orphaned and abandoned children led to the construction of SOS Children’s first community in 1987 at Abomey-Calavi. Today, the village is home to over 100 children. Unique SOS Children’s Villages at Natitingou and Dassa-Zoume are also home to over 190 children between Over 900 children attend nursery, primary and secondary school through SOS Children in Benin. A lack of schools in Benin, meant a secondary school was built in 2002 adding to the nursery and primary school, for over 400 pupils and specialist facilities for teaching arts and music. An SOS social centre at Dassa-Zoume runs programmes to help prevent abandonment to 12,000 people each year in the local communities.
