SOS Children's Villages Ethiopia
Ethiopia remains one of Africa's poorest countries. Income per capita is less than £6 per month and there are extremely low literacy rates. Continuing food and water shortages cause high levels of malnutrition, and the incidence of communicable diseases is rising. Limited educational opportunities are further disrupted by the displacement of families and the struggle for survival. Over 7.3 per cent of the population is infected and an estimated 2.2 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, including 200,000 children. SOS Children first village in Ethiopia opened at Makalle in the early 1970s. Other villages are located at Harrar, Addis Abeba, Awassa and Bahir Dar. Catastrophic drought in 2000 led to another SOS emergency relief programme, at in Ogaden in the south-east near the Somalia border. Set up in Gode this provided food and basic medical treatment. The completed village at Gode opened in August 2004 and means that over 700 children in Ethiopia have a unique family and SOS mother giving love and care. Education is provided through nursery and primary schools allowing over 3,000 children to benefit.
