Orphanages in Pune keep video records of their children

The Society of Friends of Sassoon Hospital (SOFOSH) and Bhartiya Samaj Seva Kendra (BSSK), the two orphanages in Pune(India), have come up with a novel way of maintaining records of their children by using video technology.

The videos of the orphans would be saved in compact discs (CD) and will contain detailed information about the infants, which will be help to those who adopt them.

Nepal restarts international adoptions

Nepal has begun accepting applications from foreigners who want to adopt Nepalese children, 18 months after the practice was stopped because of widespread malpractice.Foreigners willing  to adopt children have to meet the agencies set up in Nepal but not the children's homes or orphanages.

Orphan girls to join NCC

Six orphan girls have given themselves a peek into life beyond their grey orphanage walls by joining the ranks of the prestigious NCC. The girls of class VIII and IX studying in T P Patel School will be enrolled in the junior wing of Vadodara NCC from the next academic year. Although the school does not have NCC provisions, the superintendent of the orphanage and the NCC officials managed to enroll these girls for two years NCC training.

Notices for 40 orphanages in Tiruvallur district

Around 40 orphanages in the Tiruvallur district have been identified and issued notices to follow the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, said Tiruvallur district SP M C Sarangan.


The district police had arrested Rev Sadhu Immanuvel (60), the caretaker of Sahityam Charitable Trust, Vellur village for sexually torturing an inmate Revathi (18). Following her complaint, police inspected the orphanage. Inmates including eight women and two young boys were rescued and handed over to the social welfare officer.

Majdy Imad, Iraq "I can't stand the life of an orphan anymore"

BAGHDAD, Ten-year-old Majdy Imad says he cannot stand being an orphan anymore. After losing his parents and two sisters on 17 November, 2006 in sectarian killings, he was taken to an overcrowded, under-resourced Baghdad orphanage – a move that forced him to leave his school.

Majdy has only one relative; an uncle who lives outside Iraq. Majdy cries every time he remembers his family. Desperate for love and care, he told IRIN that sometimes he thinks it would have been better if he had been killed with his family rather than enduring the life he is leading now.

"I need someone to take care of me because I can't stand the life of an orphan anymore. I am used to being loved, which I don't find here in the orphanage.

Orphanage helper accused of sodomising 5 children

NEW DELHI: Five inmates of an orphanage in west Delhi were allegedly sodomised by a 50-year-old man on Monday. The accused, identified as Bala, is currently absconding.

According to the police, Bala was working as a helper in the orphanage for the past one year and is a resident of Subhash Nagar.

An orphanage run by the Pentecostal Church in Birganj is attacked and one child is wounded. A Hindu extremist group claims responsibility. It says it wants to restore the country to its Hindu theocracy, accusing Christians of converting Buddhist and Hindu children to Christianity with funds from pro-Maoist groups. The establishment’s administrators reject the accusations.
