The last 3 years have been exciting and we have learned two valuable lessons. The first is the need to develop a long term organized training program for the women and girls to give them tools that will allow them to develop skills they can use to support themselves and thier families. The second is the value of land in creating a self sufficient system. Developing a home for Widows and children that is self sufficient is going to be a difficult task but in a day and age of failing econmic conditions any external dependency can quickly turn into a liability that can bring the work we are doing to a stand still. We are hoping to buy 10 acres of land and use it to create a self sustaining agriculturally based system of support for the basic necessities of the orphans and widows. The widows will work the system learning new skills they can latter use to support themselves. Skills such as neddle work, sheparding, spindling, milking, diary production, canning, gardening, poultry, tea production, honey production, laundry, cooking domestic and international etc. We feel by exposing and training the widows and orphans in as many different skills as possible they will be prepared to enter life with skills they can market.
We estimate the project will cost about $200,000 usd. Split into two phases of 100,000 each. The first phase will consist of the purchase of the land. We will then use the land as collateral for a loan on the second development phase. To date we have about $10,000 saved up toward this project.
We had originally planned to return in April, May and June however I found it necessary to return earlier then that. For those that know us and our family I am sorry to say that my sister Julie passed away last Friday. It is the end of a 4 year battle with breast cancer. She is survived by a Husband Luke and three children. We thank you all for your prayers and encouragement during this time. The funeral is Weds. Feb 3rd, 10:30 at the Nevada Baptist Church, Nevada Ia.
